Gurupurnima 2025: An auspicious occasion to pay homage to Guru

Today, Ashadh Shukla Purnima, or Guru Purnima, is being celebrated to show respect for the Guru who taught us. Vyas Jayanti, which has been celebrated since the Vedic period on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ved Vyas, the author of the Vedic scripture Mahabharata, is considered as Guru Purnima.

Ved Vyas is considered to have contributed greatly to Hindu culture by writing religious texts such as Vedanta, Athar Puranas, Upanishads, etc. The literal meaning of the Sanskrit word Guru is that 'Gu' means darkness and 'Ru' means light. When the word Guru is used, it means 'Girati Agyanam Iti' Guru', which means a person who removes ignorance and imparts knowledge.

It has been a tradition for disciples to show their respect to the guru who taught them with various sweet dishes, and to consider the guru as their mother and father.
